WHAT ARE TRANSFORMATIVE AGREEMENTS?

Transformative agreements are new contracts negotiated between university libraries (or consortia) and publishers that publish scientific journals. These new contracts transform the current model of journal publishing.

When a researcher wants to publish an article in open access, he or she can do so in free journals, but there are other journals that cost him or her money. This cost of the article for open publication is called Article Processing Charge (APC).

With these new contracts, it has been possible to move from the traditional "pay-as-you-read" subscription model to a new model that also includes the cost of publishing in open access. Thus, the new transformative contracts allow university researchers to publish in open access to a set of journals without having to pay for it themselves.

WITH WHICH PUBLISHERS HAS THE URL SIGNED AGREEMENTS?

The , following the guidelines of the European Commission, have been negotiating a new subscription model with the following publishers:

• ACS Publications
  - APC free of charge for the researcher (a limited number of APCs per year are available)
  - List of journals included in the agreement

• SpringerNature
  - Free APC for the researcher (a limited number of APCs per year are available)
  - List of journals included in the agreement
  -
   
• Wiley
  - Free APC for the researcher (limited number of APCs per year available)
  - List of Gold journals included in the agreement
  - List of hybrid journals included in the agreement
  -

In turn, URL together with CSUC has signed an agreement with the following publishers:

• Emerald
  - APC free of charge for the researcher (a limited number of APCs per year are available).
  - Special requirements:
    1. The author of the correspondence must identify him/herself with the URL's institutional mail.
    2. The option "Yes, I want to publish my article as Open Access and my institution is eligible for a prepaid APC voucher" must be selected.
  - List of journals included in the agreement

• Frontiers
  - 10% discount on the cost price of each article, provided that your institution covers the cost.
  - The agreement includes all journals from this publisher
  - Special requirement: the author of correspondence must identify him/herself with the institutional email address of the URL.
   
• Cambridge University Press
  - Free reading access to all the university community of the University.
  - Esade-URL Correspondence Authors have the opportunity to publish OA articles in Cambridge Journals without incurring any article processing charges. To publish in a Cambridge OA Journal, the corresponding author must:
     1. Have an article accepted for publication.
     2. Provide details of your affiliation with the University when submitting your article for publication.
     3. Sign a license by selecting a Creative Commons license in the process.

  - The type of Creative Commons license available depends on each journal. You can check here the available licenses.

HOW DO TRANSFORMATIVE AGREEMENTS WORK?

Each publisher provides a certain number of APCs for open access publication. It also determines in which journals APCs can be used. From the platform of each publisher and during the publication process of an article, the publisher offers the corresponding author the possibility of publishing the article in open access within the conditions of the agreement between the publisher and the URL.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THESE AGREEMENTS?

If you are a researcher º£½ÇÉçÇø, a master or doctoral student, you can apply for a transformative agreement APC. To do so, you should contact your center and find out the procedure to follow. Remember that each center can only approve a limited number of APCs.
